700 miles...

without being a total skeptic, i must ask- "will 700 miles of concrete stop the human will to live and be in america?"

sometimes the arrogance of our country frightens me...it seems a bit paradoxical that a country which began as a new world for immigrants would now have progressed in thinking- at least theoretically- that mere concrete can stop those who are not citizens from entering the land...

it's actually strange to think that we have rounded up and placed the native americans in a particular place- the beautiful community of reservations...and now, we are once again using physical means to protect illegal occupation of the land...theologically? i am at a loss...for the moment, a bit anxiety ridden and saddened...mostly sad at the notion of our pride and measly attempt to "protect" america...i still haven't figured out what we need to be protected from...

i know...on a sliding scale, who would measure to be more will driven? 1) those in desperation, willing to risk death for the chance to make a bit of money for their families and help them- 2) or, those with great possessions and luxury trying to keep it from anyone undeserving...it could be a close race...

what do we have here that people want so badly?

Someday, sooner than the politicians think, we are going to come to the realization that borders simply don't exist in a globalized society/economy. In a world where events are shaped more by market forces than the actions of nation-states, it is ridiculous to defend the sanctity of the physical borders that separate us from other nation-states. In reality, the flow of populations from one geographical area to another shows that borders really are fluid.

Plus, when has building a large wall of separation ever turned out well? I mean, seriously.

it's the most ridiculous notion...what is sad is the idiocracy of this notion..."invest" in the wall...it will pay off...oh how time will tell...

In answer to bcdee's question about when a wall of separation has ever turned out well....

The Great Wall of China hasdone fairly well, though not due to its orginal purpose. It now attracts thousands of visitors and generates lots of tourist income. Besides, you can see it from orbit!!!

On a more serious note, I also think it is a bit of wishful thinking that all borders are going to open up anytime soon. Heck, more and more our neighborhoods right here within the U.S. are surrounding themselves with fences and gates. I doubt human nature will ever allow for truly open borders this side of the Kingdom.

Greg,

I agree, it may be wishful thinking. There will always be *some* kind of border that separates people from one another. And certainly, within nation-states, there are considerable unofficial borders that exist. However, as the concept of nation-state itself continues to evolve in an era of globalism, I am curious to see what happens to the concept of actual physical borders between countries. This is not to say that "borders" as we know them will disappear, but perhaps they will take a new form.

Have you seen the South Park episode where the City Wok guy is commissioned to build a wall around the city? Greatness...

"Stupid Mongolians!"
